Beware the Tropical Sun

When visiting the Caribbean island of Roatan, it is very important to beware the tropical sun. Many visitors forget just how powerful those rays are, and unfortunately end up feeling very uncomfortable after getting sunburned. We’ve seen it all, so please heed our advice and protect yourself from the tropical sun.

Wear Protective Gear

There is no understating the importance of protecting your skin from the tropical sun in the Caribbean. If you get sunburned on your first day of vacation, the rest of your trip will be incredibly uncomfortable.

Wearing protective gear can mean any of a number of things. A great idea is a hat of any kind – although a hat that also protects the back of your neck is ideal.

Many people forget just how strong the sun is while snorkeling. You’ll feel cool and refreshed while swimming in the Caribbean Sea, but your back is exposed at the surface. A great idea is to wear a rash guard or cotton shirt to protect yourself.

Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is another great idea to protect your skin, but there are a few things to keep in mind here.

First, spray sunscreens have gained incredible popularity, but please be aware of the excess you spray. Nobody likes inhaling it or getting it in the eye, so please be courteous while spraying your sunscreen.

Additionally, please try to choose an eco-friendly sunscreen. The chemicals in many sunscreens can wreak havoc on our fragile ecosystem. We have already seen the effects of additional tourism on our beautiful coral reef. Please help us to protect this natural wonder so people can continue to enjoy it for generations to come.

Eco-friendly sunscreens are not too hard to find, but the impact you’ll have will be greatly diminished.

Another option to diminish your impact is to not apply sunscreen until after you’ve left the water. That’s where a rash guard or a cotton shirt can come in handy! Wear your protective gear while in the water and then if you want to sunbathe after snorkeling or swimming, you can apply your sunscreen to protect your skin.

Whatever methods you prefer, it’s important to be careful with our strong tropical sun here in the Caribbean. Getting a tan isn’t the most important thing you can do…especially if you end up looking like a burned lobster instead!

We want you to have a great time while visiting us here in Roatan. Beware the tropical sun, have a fun time, and enjoy all the memories!
